That’s what I have been doing for over 35 years now—I use a BIRD Meter (the MOST Accurate) that I have over $500 into and a Modulation meter to get your CB to do ALL it can do (peak and tune CB’s to the Max). When you get the FULL power & modulation out of your CB, it WON’T be TO LOUD, and you won’t damage your final because of it. The antenna system is what damages the CB’s final. So when I get you antenna system problem free & set right with a beter designed antenna, you have VERY LITTLE power going back to the CB to damage it! That means MORE power goes OUT your antenna for more range so they can hear you WAY down the road!
I got some BAD news to tell you, and some GOOD news! The BAD news is that your Cobra or Uniden is NOT doing 20 to 90 or more watts like you’ve been told! It does 4 watts out of the box, and when they are ALL the way up, they do 5 – 7 watts (and 40% LOUDER when you talk on it). With the OLD bigger final, converted for MORE power, & parts added, I have done 2 CB’s to do 12.5 watts DEAD KEY, the highest I’ve ever seen in 35 years! That’s AM dead key watts on an AM METER (not a SSB meter, or peak meter WHISTLING into the mic.) When you whistle AM power into the mic on a SSB meter, it goes to 20 – 90 watts or so. You are NOT doing that power! Using an AM meter, it maybe goes 2 watts higher, or so. I did a 4 wheeler’s CB by taking out the mod. Kit & the power went from 2 to 7 watts. These mod kits are put in by the WORST places in the country! When your POWER goes down, you GO LESS distance! He was told that he was doing 20 – 30 watts! What deception! The GOOD news is that I can get rid of this JUNK & get your Cobra or Uniden higher for less $$$ !
I see 1 out of 20 Cobras & Unidens peaked right (all the way up) so called “peak & tune.” Galaxies, Connex, Ranger, Gen. Lee or Washington, Stryker, Magnum & others I see 1 or 2 done right PER YEAR ! AND the CB’s I see with he AMP built into the bottom of it, I DOUBLE the power out of it, or more!
When a CB will do 12 to 25 watts, and they set it around 8 watts, and when radios do 100 – 135 watts, and they set them at 40 – 60 or less, and when a radio will do 300 WATTS and they set them at 85 – 100, what does that tell you? I saw a CB that would do 300 watts set at 11 watts! That’s how LOW they set them, and internet “stores” seem to be WORSE than truckstop CB shops! There are VERY FEW CB’s out there that should NOT be put ALL the way up. I know which ones they are, and I can set them at the max. they should be set at SAFELY!
E mail me or call for an address (where I’m at @ the time you call), so you can send t to me so I can turn your CB INTO a BIG Radio, or sell you a bigger one IF you want the next size bigger for the MOST amount of range, for the LEAST amount of $$$ !
(and remember—I’m NOT on “sales drugs!” I sell people what they NEED; the MOST power for the least $$$$. I fix & tune up MORE than I sell! Chances ARE that your CB WILL DO more, regardless of what you’ve been told! It probably is NOT all the way up!
I collected this radio to try to repair for a friend, now I seem to have inherited it. It shows good carrier, about 40 watts which i plan to lower. good receive and is on frequency both send and receive, but the modulation just slightly bumps the meter and drops back. no sound output when you key up. Just dead key.
I have tinkered on radios awhile, no expert, but I can solder and test a few things on my multimeter.
